The paper punch card had a good run. But it gets lost, it tells you nothing about your regulars, and reprinting it is a small tax on every promotion. Here is how to run a coffee loyalty program that fits how people actually pay today: on their phone.
1. Pick a reward that pays for itself
The classic "buy nine, get the tenth free" works because the maths are kind. A free coffee costs you the beans and the cup, not the menu price, so a reward that brings someone in ten times instead of six is pure margin. Keep the goal close enough to feel reachable. Nine is friendlier than fifteen.
2. Get it into the wallet, not another app
Nobody downloads an app for a single café. The trick is to use the wallet that is already on every phone. With a digital card in Apple or Google Wallet, the customer taps once and it sits next to their bank card, updating itself on every visit.
3. Make the counter dead simple
During the morning rush, staff cannot fiddle with a tablet. A single QR code by the till that the customer scans, or that staff scan on the customer's phone, is all it takes. The stamp ticks up, and the free coffee pops the moment it is earned.
4. Bring people back on purpose
This is where a modern program pulls ahead. If a regular has not been in for two weeks, a gentle "your free coffee is waiting" on their lock screen brings a good share of them back. Better still, let it send automatically at the hour they usually visit.
5. Watch the numbers, not your gut
You want to see who is thriving, who is cooling off, and whether last week's offer worked. A program that shows you that turns loyalty from a guess into a habit you can grow.
